History
Starting with the first IUTAM symposium on Laminar-Turbulent Transition, organized in 1979 in Stuttgart, Germany, the subsequent years have seen a great deal of activity within the community that led to the subsequent organization of further symposia in 1984 (Novosibirsk, Russia), 1989 (Toulouse, France), 1994 (Sendai, Japan), 1999 (Sedona, U.S.A.), 2004 (Bangalore, India), 2009 (Stockholm, Sweden) and 2014 (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). These symposia bear witness to a dynamic and ongoing development of transition research, and numerous key developments over more than three decades have been presented and discussed during these meetings. The choice of locations has been prompted by eminent research centers in transition, as well as the emergence of active research communities in this field. Despite an impression of regular scheduling of the meetings since 1979, each individual symposium has been motivated and argued for by essential and critical developments in the field which made an exchange of new ideas among the community (and the organization of a symposium) valuable and beneficial.
